Soap Box Derby

Mission Statement

The John Lee Memorial Soap Box Derby Fund is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation, organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes; more specifically to purchase, own and provide Soap Box Derby race cars to underprivileged children as well as to provide financial support to sanctioned Soap Box Derby race events.

The non profit corporation was founded on two biblical principals:
Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me – Matthew 25:40
Love your neighbor as yourself – Matthew 19:19

John Lee - Biography

John Lee was born with a love of racing, the outdoors, children and people. His main goal in life was to serve others, doing his best to treat his neighbor like himself. John studied medicine, earning his Advanced Paramedic degree in 1984. He worked for a private ambulance service and later joined his local county fire department serving as a first class firefighter, advanced paramedic, relief driver and primary swimmer on the swift water rescue team.

Always a racing enthusiast, John started his own auto race team in the late 80’s, racing a Club Formula Ford with the Sports Car Club of America. He set a track record at Road Atlanta and often finished in the top three of his class. He earned a podium finish in the regional championships in 1993. If you knew John, you knew his 'need for speed' as he was often seen driving a race car, a Lotus, a shifter kart or riding a motorcycle. Regardless of the toy, they all had the same number - 22.

John lost his fight with diabetes at the age of 54, during the summer of 2006. He left us all too soon and he is certainly missed by all who knew him and loved him. The John Lee Memorial Soap Box Derby Fund was established as a loving tribute to his life. The Fund provides a ‘chance of a lifetime’ for many children and establishes a legacy for race car number 22.

Please join us as we celebrate John’s life, his heart for helping others, and his love of racing.
